As part of the firm's continued work in drainage and flood control engineering, LJA Engineering is analyzing various improvements designed to bring flood relief to an existing 130-acre, single-family, residential development in Pearland, Texas.
The Corrigan subdivision, which lies within the Mary's Creek flood hazard area, has had a history of flooding problems. In fact, approximately 36 houses within Corrigan are being purchased by FEMA due to severe damage inflicted during Tropical Storm Allison.
Working for the City of Pearland with Turner, Collie & Braden (TC&B) as program manager, LJA has modeled a system to correct chronic flooding in the Corrigan subdivision. The system is based on creating floodwalls, diverting off-site drainage around the subdivision, improving storm sewers and directing the flood flows to an existing pond that will be reconfigured to serve as pumped retention for Corrigan.

Commented LJA project manager Carolyn Gilligan, "Our challenge was to retrofit an existing subdivision and bring it up to current standards. Our design amounts to the rehabilitation of a large-scale system."
To date, LJA has completed a preliminary report and presented it to the Citizen's Committee from the subdivision and the City of Pearland. The final analysis and report were submitted in late July.
